Stay fit at home

This pandemic has left millions of people around the world scrunched at home.

The abrupt disruption of the family routine, lack of social and physical activity and fears related to the outbreak can be quite stressful and anxiety-producing, especially for children. Along with the already confusing enigma of social distancing and working from home added to the mix, keeping children occupied and also working turns out be a hurdle. It is impossible to go out for the movies or to park or even to eat out. So, what do you do with the hours that tick by?

Here are some ideas that will help keep your kid balanced during this stressful time:

  • Help them stay connected with friends and family using video call or phone calls.
  • Monitor their news and social media intake
  • Keep up their routine - Leading a normal daily routine is advisable: wake up the same time as earlier, get dressed, eat breakfast, do schoolwork, take a break, play games for recess etc.
  • Practice mindfulness with them - It is advisable to occupy your kids with something good and engaging like breathing exercises, draw, paint, sing, cook, meditate, dance, sing, read a story etc.
  • Keep them positive – Mention more about things you and your family is grateful for, help them choose activities which are pleasant and improve their mood.
  • Keep up their physical activity – This is very important considering the current situation. In the era of social distancing, kids are unable to go out and play. When they are at home, they are going to spend more time sleeping, watching online videos etc. which is not good for their mental and physical health.

Lingering at a place for continued periods and low levels of physical activity can have contradictory effects on the health, and the well-being of your kid.

Physical activity and relaxation techniques can be valuable tools to remain calm and continue to protect your health during this time.

Apart from enhancing the physical development of your child, a workout can also help in their psychological well-being:

  • Boosts confidence and self-esteem: This may be related to exercise and its ability to boost mood, increase positivity and strengthen self-worth.
  • Improves concentration and thinking skills: Studies have shown that exercising improves a child’s academic achievement.
  • Improves posture: Correct posture is very critical as negligence can result in fatigue, back and neck pain and headaches.
  • Relieves stress and promotes relaxation: Workout is a fantastic way to relieve stress and anxiety. It can also improve sleep which is critical for a child’s overall health and wellbeing.
  • Boosts energy levels: Due to improved circulation and blood flow, physical activities help the body deliver more oxygen and essential nutrients to your tissues, which, in turn, allows you to do more and feel better.
  • Controls mood swings: Workout can help calm kids down and stabilize their mood swings, and this manifests as good behaviour of the kids.

You don’t need to leave your house for a workout, try out Home workouts. Establishing a workout routine could, most importantly, ease anxiety related to coping with the pandemic.

Several hypothesized theories state that exercise is beneficial for cognition. It is believed to improve blood flow and oxygen supply to our brains, also it has been shown to reduce stress and improve mood. Proper workouts have been shown to create new nerve cells and improve their communication.Exercise helps us release endorphins which are also called as 'feel good hormones' in our brain and they eventually make us feel happy. It is also the same thing in the case of children.

Physical literacy has to be imparted at a very young age. However, schools, parents and education institutes in India have failed to do so, instead they end up laying a lot of stress on academics. In most cases they’ve restricted themselves with an ordinary physical training class, once or twice a week. Often the schools fail to understand which sport is appropriate for which age group.Just as academic literacy begins with the alphabet or numbers, physical literacy also has alphabets. These alphabets are running, jumping, throwing and kicking.

The earlier the kids are introduced to a variety of physical movements, the better their physical literacy will be.It provides children and youth with the skills, attitude, knowledge and understanding for lifelong participation in the society. More the parents and the child is equipped with physical literacy, more opportunities would be created for him to stay active and healthy.

Kleinetics fitness and several academies are offering workout sessions that can help you to get your kid to become physically active and mentally strong to fight back the current scenario. Take advantage of these opportunities and get your kids moving. There are tons of videos for kids that will get them dancing, jumping and away from electronics. Fun activities and mental stimulation with family and friends in a supportive environment give children the sense that they've achieved something new and challenging.

Staying in is no excuse to stop staying fit. Be at home and do it!
